This week’s research review contains articles on niacin for carotid occulusion:

Extended-release niacin or ezetimibe and carotid intima-media thickness, NEJM (Taylor, Villines et al. 2009)

The ARBITER 6-HALTS trial was terminated early on the basis of a pre-specified interim analysis showing superiority of niacin over ezetimibe on change in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). (Villines, Stanek et al. 2010)

New articles highlight rift over statins By Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Times June 29, 2010 Link

A meta-analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that statins do not lower death rates among patients with risk factors but no evidence of established cardiovascular disease who take them as a preventive measure. (Ray, Seshasai et al. 2010)
